Modern Language Department

At Saint Lawrence Academy, Modern Language is more than memorizing vocabulary and conjugating verbs.  Students learn that language is a means of communication, a tool by which to communicate with their classmates, on the job, and in real-life situations.

The department focuses on four basic skills of language: speaking, listening, reading and writing.  Additionally, students are exposed to various cultures, their traditions and holidays, and histories.  In American Sign Language class, students learn about deaf culture and society and the means by which to communicate with the deaf and hearing impaired.

It is not an unusual sight to find students signing the Pledge of Allegiance or the Our Father.  Students carry on conversations in Spanish, create an altar for "Day of the Dead", and view Spanish telanovelas.  Trips to the local Starbucks for Deaf Culture events or the celebration of Cinco de Mayo are annual events.
